Meryl saw Turtle again the next day. She hadn’t been bothered by Tom, and if she had to guess why, it was likely because he’d been preoccupied with reacquainting himself with a certain caretaker. All night long.

She’d have thought the older man would be drained and haggard after so many hours of dealing with the Phantom. Instead, as she opened her door to answer his knock, the fifty-two year old looked… shiny and bright and glowing. He looked ten years younger—and rather handsome, too—even though he was scowling and quite obviously far from being happy about his recent experience.

“Hope you’re not too busy, Meryl. Now’s a good time to have that talk. Hang on, I’ll see if Halley’s up.”

For highly personal reasons, Meryl didn’t think including Halley was such a good idea, but she quickly saw the point—Halley would hear an explanation from Turtle the same time Meryl would, making it a lot easier on her. It didn’t matter if Halley didn’t believe any of it. Meryl had a feeling every single soul in that building would be all in this together before long.

Halley had indeed been up, but she was reluctant to be called out—though at the same time curious about what it could be about. She strongly suspected an attempt on Turtle’s part to mediate between her and Meryl and was intrigued by the prospect of more drama, despite herself.

The caretaker took the women out where the Phantom couldn’t follow, because for good or ill, the spirit was tied to that apartment building. They walked the pedestrian-friendly streets and went to one of the coffee shops that the college crowd frequented.

The three of them drew considerable attention—the females were both attractive in different ways, and the single older male not only looked good but was also exuding some powerful pheromones.

After they all placed orders and took an out of the way table, the small company sat in awkward silence, none of them certain on how to open the conversation, Halley not even knowing what this was really about. Meryl took small but frequent sips of her coffee, gazing at the cup raptly in between. The other woman ignored hers.

Turtle finally broke the silence by broaching, “I know something has happened between you two…” It was not the best way to start since it sent Meryl to furious blushing and Halley into straightening her back and putting on an expression of stony defensiveness. He sighed and went on. “But aside from that, Hal, did any other stuff happen? That you found weird, I mean. A dream, perhaps? Or did you find yourself doing… things… for no good reason that you could later think of?”

Halley’s eyes narrowed, but both her companions could tell something sparked up in her mind.

“What are you going on about, old man?” she said brusquely.

Turtle and Meryl glanced at each other.

“You’re probably not gonna believe any of this, but there’s something I need to tell you…”

Turtle launched haltingly into a story, one that he said occurred more than two decades ago.
